Car leasing for a private individual

Leasing (or renting, long-term rental) means driving a car, often new, for a fixed monthly payment, usually all-inclusive, over 12 to 60 months. At the end of the contract, you return the vehicle, or buy it if a purchase option was included. This tool calculates the real total cost of the deal from your offer.

What the monthly payment often includes

  • maintenance and wear repairs;
  • insurance (comprehensive, third-party liability);
  • road tax;
  • roadside assistance, sometimes tyres.

This scope is exactly what justifies comparing leasing to a purchase plus these items, not just the vehicle price alone.

Advantages and disadvantages

👍 Advantages

  • fixed, predictable, all-inclusive monthly budget;
  • no capital tied up in a car;
  • recent vehicle, regularly renewed;
  • no maintenance or resale hassle.

👎 Disadvantages

  • you own nothing at the end of the contract;
  • capped mileage, extra cost beyond it;
  • possible reconditioning fees;
  • total cost often higher than buying;
  • firm commitment (early termination is costly).

Private individual: no tax deduction

Note: unlike a self-employed person or a company, a private individual cannot deduct lease payments for tax purposes. If you drive through a company, the relevant logic is instead the benefit in kind (BIK).

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between leasing and renting?

Renting (long-term rental) is a simple rental: you return the vehicle at the end of the contract. Financial leasing includes a purchase option (residual value) letting you own the vehicle at the end. For a private individual, the most common offer is all-inclusive renting.

What is usually included in the monthly payment?

Depending on the contract: maintenance, insurance, road tax, roadside assistance, sometimes tyres. Check this scope precisely: it is what makes the comparison with buying actually meaningful.

Is leasing worthwhile for a private individual?

It offers a fixed, all-inclusive monthly budget, a recent vehicle and zero resale hassle, but you own nothing at the end and the total cost is often higher than buying. Unlike a self-employed person or a company, a private individual cannot deduct these payments for tax purposes.

Is there a mileage limit?

Almost always. The monthly payment is calculated for a contractual annual mileage; extra kilometres are billed at the end of the contract, and unused kilometres are sometimes partly refunded. Underestimating your mileage can be costly.

Can I finance the car differently?

Yes: paying cash or a car loan. To estimate the cost of financing via credit, use our consumer credit simulator and compare it with the total leasing cost.
