Inheritance & gifts in Belgium

Inheriting or gifting comes with a tax cost that varies significantly by region and family relationship. These free tools estimate the tax due for your situation.

Tax that depends on region and family relationship

In Belgium, inheritance and gift tax are set by the regions, not the federal government. The amount due therefore depends on the region of the deceased or donor, the family relationship with the beneficiary, and the nature of the transferred asset (movable or immovable).

Two separate tools

The inheritance tax calculator estimates the tax due on your share of an estate. The gift tax calculator does the same for a movable or immovable gift made during your lifetime, a mechanism with its own distinct rules.

Frequently asked questions

Is inheritance tax the same everywhere in Belgium?

No. Inheritance and gift tax are a regional competence: rates and allowances differ between Wallonia, Brussels and Flanders. Our calculators cover Wallonia and Brussels.

Does the family relationship significantly change the amount due?

Yes, substantially. A spouse or child benefits from a much more favourable rate than an unrelated third party, for the same inherited amount.

Gift or inheritance: what tax difference?

Both follow progressive bracket rates set by the region, but with rates and allowances specific to each mechanism. Our two separate calculators let you estimate each case independently.
